It may not have risen to that level on Sunday but the goalless draw they forced with Bunbury United in the Prremier League Reserve competition at the Soccerdrome on Sunday will go down as one their best for the season. The Towners faced a Bunbury side that had won seven times and drawn once while scoring 39 goals and conceding a miserly five. It was with trepidation that Dunsborough took the field because of this record, especially as the only substitutes they could call on were two promising juniors in Sam Holt( 13) and Aidan Greig (15). In addition they had to use Richard Olsen, Joe Pregelj, who was suffering with a virus, and Brent Hillyard, who was forced off with a groin strain, despite being required for the following Premier League match. Again, like the match to follow, there was little in the two sides as each fought tenaciously for an opening with both goalkeepers called on to show timing and courage to prevent a breakthrough. Cohen Sadlier (14) is now a regular in the reserve side and on Sunday he was named “man of the match” confirming that he is one of the finds of the year, and like his senior colleague, Josh Watt, was central in the Towners success. Dunsborough owe just as much to the veterans of the side in Tony Plumb, Wayne Perna, Martyn Mulley, Doug Horsford and Mick Finney, all in the 40 plus category, with tireless commitment. Midfielder Mark Ferguson had one of his best games for the club while up front Prengelj and Olsen caused countless headaches and it seemed only a matter of time before they scored. However, Bunbury have not established this season’s record for nothing and they too had moments in which the back of the net should have been bulging. It came as a shock, however, when with only seconds remaining Finney made a powerful run down the right beat his marker reached the penalty area and slipped a perfect cross to an unmarked Craig Agar on the edge of the six yard box. With all the time in the world to place the ball anywhere he somehow hit a soft shot at goalkeeper Peter Shurmer and seconds later the final whistle sounded. Dunsborough line-up: Cohen Sadlier, Martyn Mulley, Wayne Perna, Brent Hillyard, Doug Horsford, Tony Plumb, Mark Ferguson, Craig Agar, Troy Lanigan, Joe Pregelj, Mike Finney. Substitutes: Wayne Davies, Sam Holt, Aiden Greig, Craig Ryan, Richard Olsen, Iain Greig. Man of the Match. Cohen Sadlier |
